try a tri!
How to get started? Many people have commented that they
would like to try a Triathlon, however, didn’t feel
comfortable with the swim component even though they could
handle the bike and run.
We have come up with a solution. It’s called our
Try-a-Tri, which has a very modest swim of 300m (12 lengths
of a 25m. pool). Many of the participants do the
distance using the breast stroke, which is perfectly fine,
since the emphasis on this event is to allow people to try a
triathlon and complete the event, and have fun doing so.
The bike course is flat and 15 km and the run is 3 km.
In order to get started, you will need to practice some
swimming, some biking and some running. Some of the
entrants use mountain bikes. If you don’t have a road
bike and can’t borrow one, put road tires or slicks on your
mountain bike in order to make the pedaling a little easier.
You should practice doing a couple of bricks (i.e. doing more
than one event in the same workout). This is
especially so for the bike-to-run transition, so that your
legs can get used to going from the one event to the other.
This is not an overly strenuous event and most beginners would
be expected to complete in approximately 1 hour.
People are applauded for the efforts rather than their speed
and will be very pleased to experience the support and
camaraderie that exists amongst racers in this event.
To practice the swimming, most swimming pools have times where
they specifically mark off for lane swimming. Contact
your local pool and determine the pool schedule.
For local athletes,
Sun City Physiotherapy is prepared to answer your
questions on how to get started.
Fresh
Air Experience is also prepared to answer questions and
in fact is offering some Triathlon Clinics. This is
also a good place to purchase equipment.
