Vancouver, B.C. (April 25, 2007): 2010 Legacies Now, through its Hosting BCTM program, is investing $10,000 in the 2007 Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon and the ITU Pan America Continental Cup, which will take place in Kelowna this August. This funding is part of an overall investment of $271,500 in 11 communities hosting 20 major sporting events around B.C.
“Hosting high-calibre sporting competitions like this one further builds on Kelowna’s already great reputation as a first-class place to hold major sporting events,” said Sindi Hawkins, MLA for Kelowna-Mission. “I’m happy our government can support this championship through 2010 Legacies Now.”
“2010 Legacies Now is committed to building B.C.’s reputation as a premier sport event destination,” said Bruce Dewar, chief executive officer, 2010 Legacies Now. “From triathlons and sailing, to sledge hockey and curling, the Hosting BCTM program is helping communities attract and host a wide range of sport events.”
Over 2,500 spectators will visit Kelowna to watch more than 1,000 athletes compete in the 2007 Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon and the ITU Pan America Continental Cup taking place August 18-19, 2007.
“The 2007 Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon, Triathlon Canada and the ITU Pan America Continental Cup would like to sincerely thank 2010 Legacies Now for its invaluable support,” said Richard Montgomery, president, Kelowna Apple Triathlon Society. “This Hosting BCTM grant will significantly assist us in developing our local athletes, attracting athletes from across the country, and hosting a world class competitive event.”
“Events like these showcase Kelowna as a great sport tourism destination,” said Cal McCarthy, chair of the Kelowna Spirit of BC Community Committee. “They provide ideal opportunities for our athletes to compete locally and will be perfect occasions to develop skilled volunteers within our community.”

Single-sport events at junior, senior and university levels are eligible for funding. This year, events receiving Hosting BCTM grants include Canadian championships, World Cups and Olympic Games qualifying tournaments.
